Success Stories
Group projects and teamworking are one of the fundamental aspects of the B.I. Program. Starting from freshman year, students are able to work on team projects with real world problems applying to business around Colorado.
ALIIVE
One of our successful projects involves the ALIIVE team, which is an acronym for Advance Live-fire Integrated Intelligent Virual Environment. Freshmen students in the B.I. program developed an idea for a virtual combat training system for military use, entailing a shock suit, GPS units, and laser line-of-sight operation. The BI team and Dr. Boult partnered with a local company, Combat Training Solutions, to pursue a Phase I SBIR. The ALIIVE team developed the proposal were awarded a DOD contract for $100,000 to further the research/design. This B.I. team, most of who were then paid from that funding, worked on advancing the product design, market research, coding, and proposal writing; all useful skills that can be used in thier careers.
Tier1Performance Solutons XL-CITR Project
A team of BI students, supported Tier1Performance Solutions and Doctors Edward Chow and Tim Chamillard and Terry Boult of UCCS, to develop a SBIR proposal on Serious Gaming, using game technology to help military personel learn about insider threat cyber security. The proposal was successful, with the combined Tier1Performanece solutions/UCCS Team wining $200,000 in Federal and Kentucky State funding. The implementation effort was lead by Tier1, with BI Students working with graduate students in CyberSecurity to develop protytpes. The team has been invited to submit for the $750,000 Phase II award to take it all the way to a full commercial product.
DriveSmart/EASIN
Driving under the influence is a major problem, and a team of BI students have been working with Drs. Boult and Lewis on an innovative solution. The team has submitted four proposals, including a major NIH proposal and an NSF proposal, and already spun off a company and partnered with local. Look to see more on this when we finalize the licensing deal for the IP.
WUFFIT
Working with Alison Brown, a local serial Entrepreneur, a team of eight BI students are building the technology and business models for a non-profit company using GPS and GSM technology for tracking and training pets. The students have been working on both the actual phone and GPS components, the dog collars and the business modeling and e-commerce web-setup. The company will be active before the end of the summer!
